[Zhao Changpeng: Statistically, storing cryptocurrency on exchanges is safer than self-custody wallets] Binance founder Zhao Changpeng responded to custody security data released by Willy Woo, stating that, from a statistical perspective, storing cryptocurrency on exchanges is safer than using self-custody wallets. Willy Woo's data shows that approximately 1.57 million BTC have been lost through self-custody wallets, while exchanges have cumulatively lost about 1.51 million BTC, with the two figures being nearly equal. Zhao Changpeng pointed out that hacking data on the exchange side is easier to collect and often makes headlines, whereas data on the self-custody side is harder to quantify—losses and thefts are typically not reported. Additionally, the exchange-side data is impacted by defunct platforms dragging down overall performance, while exchanges like Binance have consistently provided full compensation for platform-side hacking incidents. Zhao Changpeng emphasized that this is not to suggest one method is superior to the other; different methods have different risk characteristics and are suitable for different groups of people. A balanced approach may be the most prudent.
