OpenAI solved 10 unsolved math problems for $2,000! That’s an average of $200 per problem—basically a grad student’s weekend stipend.
In a 249-page paper, OpenAI revealed major breakthroughs by its internal model Astra on 10 long-standing unsolved math problems. These span fields like high-dimensional geometry, group theory, and lattice cryptography, with mathematicians calling it 'Fields Medal-level work.'
The biggest highlight? Astra constructed an infinitely finitely presented non-sofic group, putting an end to Gromov’s conjecture proposed back in 1999.
The most mind-blowing part? The total cost of generating all the proofs, calculated at API pricing, was less than $2,000.
