The COLDCARD hack is horrifying, the fact you could have done everything right, make zero mistakes, but still lose all your crypto…
Despite the circumstances, I still believe self custody via hardware wallet is the optimal approach for the average crypto native with moderate holdings
This is obviously circumstantial, smaller holders (<$1K) and larger whales (>$10M) should generally stick with qualified custodians (e.g., Coinbase, BitGo) for various reasons
But for the middle, using a trusted hardware wallet (Trezor or Ledger) combined with a BIP-39 passphrase (25th word) and redundant non-digital seed backups is your fortress
No it’s not perfect, but just like with password managers, it’s better than what most people would default to when self custodying (browser extension, mobile app)
The pendulum always swings..
FTX = custody bad, self custody good
COLDCARD = custody good, self custody bad
Both are true and false in their own way, DYOR, find out what works best for you(Zach Rynes | CLG)
