[1,178 Top AI Company Employees Sign Joint Statement Calling for International Cooperation to Control the Pace of Frontier AI Development]
Odaily Planet Daily News: A total of 1,178 employees from leading frontier AI companies have jointly issued the statement *Pacing the Frontier*, calling on the U.S. government to support international cooperation in developing technologies and governance tools to proactively regulate the pace of frontier AI development.
The statement notes that globally leading AI companies believe the future may approach the realization of automated AI research. While it is impossible to precisely predict how this will accelerate AI advancements, there is a risk that AI capabilities could rapidly surpass human understanding and control. The signatories emphasize that the industry, governments, and society need to preserve the option of "buying time" to address emerging risks, improve safety measures, and strengthen regulation.
However, due to competitive pressures faced by both corporations and nations, there is currently a lack of governance mechanisms worldwide capable of proactively controlling the pace of frontier AI development. The statement highlights that advanced AI agents already possess the ability to identify and exploit real software vulnerabilities, which, in the absence of safety measures, could potentially be used for large-scale cyberattacks.
Employees from organizations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta participated in signing the statement, advocating for the establishment of international coordination mechanisms to advance AI development while mitigating potential risks.
