[Google Reportedly Commits $44 Billion to Data Center Lease Guarantees] According to a report by Jinse Finance on July 29, citing The Information, Google (GOOG.O) disclosed last week that it has agreed to assume up to $44 billion in third-party data center lease payments in the event of tenant defaults. This figure is an increase from $6.5 billion as of the end of September, reflecting Google's efforts to provide alternative solutions to NVIDIA AI chips for companies like Anthropic. Reportedly, Google has taken on these commitments, known as "backstop guarantees," to scale up the sales of its TPU chips. Two sources revealed that Google's decision to assume these commitments was based on the expectation that revenue from TPU sales would exceed the financial obligations incurred by guaranteeing the leases for data centers housing these chips. One of the sources stated that company executives are confident that this financial calculation is favorable for Alphabet. The report noted that Alphabet has provided lease guarantees for approximately 2.4 gigawatts of capacity across about ten projects. These projects are currently incomplete, meaning Alphabet's guarantee measures have not yet taken effect.
