Japan just found a trump card against China. A drilling ship pulled 50 tons of mud from nearly 20,000 feet under the Pacific in February. This week the lab results came back: over half the rare earths inside were the hard-to-get kind China has been choking off, the ones behind chips, EV motors, jet engines, weapons systems. China still controls 69% of global rare earth production and 91% of refining. That's real leverage. Japan's own dependence already fell from 90% to 63% over the last decade, and this seabed mud is the next move to keep cutting that number. Still not proven commercially viable. But if it is, this isn't just a Japan story. It's a crack in China's grip on the entire global tech supply chain, and a tailwind for every industry stuck waiting on rare earths.(Lark Davis)
