[South Korean Official: South Korea Must Independently Develop Domestic Cutting-Edge AI Models] According to a report by Jinse Finance, South Korea's Minister of Science and Technology, Bae Kyung-hoon, stated on Monday that cutting-edge artificial intelligence models could evolve into geopolitical strategic assets comparable to nuclear weapons. He reiterated that South Korea must independently develop domestic cutting-edge AI models. Just a month ago, the U.S. government suddenly banned overseas users from accessing Anthropic's top-tier AI models, Fable and Mythos, citing security concerns. Marking his one-year anniversary as minister, Bae Kyung-hoon emphasized during a related meeting: "Cutting-edge AI models at the frontier level are increasingly acquiring strategic attributes akin to nuclear weapons. The desire of certain nations to control these top-tier AI systems will only grow stronger." He added: "We are formulating specialized plans and actively coordinating with various relevant government departments. South Korea must rise to the challenge and independently develop cutting-edge AI models to establish globally competitive artificial intelligence capabilities.
