An interview with Kimi founder Yang Zhilin from two years ago: Open-sourcing top-tier models might not be rational. At this stage, choosing to open-source is the best way to maximize current benefits, especially since there isn’t enough computing power to serve so many people.
In the future, China’s open-source models might evolve into a form of restricted open-source, which could lead to better business models. Having the best models but lacking sufficient computing power to provide services is quite an awkward situation. Even Kimi’s major shareholder Alibaba, running at full capacity, wouldn’t be able to meet such massive computing demands. Due to computing power limitations in China, even the most advanced models can only maximize benefits by taking the open-source route, albeit with some restrictions.
