The dark side of the moon: Kimi's open source comes with restrictions. Previously, Cursor used Kimi's base model to build its own model. While attribution is mandatory, there’s no revenue sharing.
User threshold: The product's monthly active users (MAU) must exceed 100 million.
Revenue threshold: The product's monthly revenue must exceed $20 million.
Cursor's annual recurring revenue (ARR) has reached $2 billion, with monthly earnings of about $167 million. Unfortunately, Kimi hasn’t gotten a single penny from this. With such a top-tier model being open-sourced again, it’s time to consider adding some licensing revenue to the mix and raising the ceiling a bit.
At this level of capability, you can’t just let people freeload anymore. Open source is fine, but there should be some restrictions to create more revenue for yourself. Without the advantage of sustainable cash flow, it’s hard to keep going. After all, if you keep burning money, it’ll run out one day.
