[U.S. Treasury Secretary: $1 Coin Featuring Trump's Portrait to Be Minted in Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of the United States] According to China News Service, U.S. Treasury Secretary Besant stated on the 15th that to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the U.S. Mint will begin minting $1 coins featuring the portrait of President Trump on the obverse. The obverse of the coin will also include the inscriptions 'Liberty,' 'In God We Trust,' and '1776–2026,' while the reverse will feature a bald eagle design. Trump expressed that he feels 'honored' by this coin. However, critics have raised questions about the legality of the coin. A U.S. law from 1866 stipulates that the portraits of living individuals cannot be used on U.S. currency, but this law applies to paper money printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, whereas coins are minted by the U.S. Mint. In 2020, the U.S. Congress passed a law authorizing the Treasury Secretary to mint $1 coins to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, but the law prohibits the depiction of living individuals on the coins.
