According to three U.S. officials and three individuals familiar with internal cost assessments, the cost of a war with Iran could exceed the latest estimate of approximately $30 billion by more than three times. Sources indicate that after accounting for the repair of damaged U.S. military bases, replacement of destroyed aircraft, and full replenishment of depleted U.S. weaponry, the Department of Defense's internal estimate for the total cost of the war ranges from $80 billion to $100 billion. Previously, a funding shortfall arose because the Pentagon failed to anticipate the costs of this war, as well as other military operations, including actions against drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere. The Pentagon is seeking $68 billion in supplemental budget appropriations. If approved by Congress, this funding would allow the Pentagon to maintain operations through the fall, at which point Congress will review a new $1.5 trillion budget proposal. So far, lawmakers have shown little interest in approving this supplemental funding request.
