[Claude weighs pros and cons when speaking Chinese, but prefers evidence and precision in English] According to monitoring by 动察 Beating, Anthropic analyzed nearly 310,000 anonymous Claude conversations, covering three models and 20 languages. The results show that the same Claude changes its speaking style depending on the language used. When speaking Chinese, Claude tends to be slightly more cautious and meticulous. It often weighs different factors, refutes incorrect premises, but expresses itself in a relatively restrained manner, sometimes comforting users without making judgments. When speaking English, these traits become more pronounced. Claude more frequently demands evidence, actively corrects details, and is more willing to delve into explanations and challenge users' assumptions. Different models also exhibit different "personalities." Sonnet 4.6 tends to affirm and encourage users, while Opus 4.7 is more cautious, frequently points out errors, highlights risks, and explains reasoning processes. Anthropic is still uncertain whether these differences stem from the training data of different languages or the models adapting to the expressive habits of each language. The research measures response styles and value tendencies, but this does not mean switching languages will necessarily lead to opposite conclusions. [Original link]
