Trump didn’t allow Iran to charge fees for passing through the Strait of Hormuz, but now the U.S. is turning around and planning to charge fees for Hormuz. Yesterday, I thought Iran deserved to be dealt with, but now I think Trump is even worse. Even if Iran had plans to charge fees, it definitely wouldn’t have been as outrageous as 20%. Now Trump is planning to directly charge all ships passing through Hormuz a fee worth 20% of their cargo. Is the Republican Party out of its mind? And they’re starting this immediately. At this point, I feel like Trump and Iran are cut from the same cloth. Blocking Iran is understandable, but now the U.S. is shifting into the role of the villain. America no longer has the right to call itself the world’s policeman. Trump is essentially forcefully claiming Hormuz as part of U.S. jurisdiction. The Strait of Hormuz is an international navigation strait. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal states are not allowed to obstruct transit passage. Even under the normal territorial sea regime, fees cannot be charged simply because ships pass through; fees can only be collected for specific services provided to specific vessels. The International Maritime Organization has already publicly reiterated that passage through the Strait of Hormuz should remain free of transit fees and other charges. @Gate Crypto, U.S. stocks, Hong Kong stocks, Korean stocks, gold, CFDs, prediction markets—all-in-one trading platform.
