My personal opinion on the gate theft incident
I have been following the theft of funds on the gate platform throughout the entire process, but I have not spoken out. Sometimes it is a good thing to let bullets fly for a while
Because the closer we get to the truth, the closer we get
Today Gate apologized, and the apology was repeated at the beginning and end of the long article. It took two days to go from being tough to apologizing, which shows that there is a lot of public pressure (the employees' bizarre remarks earlier are unacceptable to normal people), and it is also possible that security vulnerabilities have indeed been discovered.
This personal opinion stems from just seeing that the investigation by Bitrace_team found that stolen funds flowed to the Newpay platform, which is very important information
The following content is an objective comment, without any "hard maintenance" cooperation with the official platform, purely engaged in industry thinking
Bitrace_team is considered the most influential team in the field of on chain tracking within the industry, with long-term cooperation with many local law enforcement agencies and regulatory departments. The core data sources are recognized, and the previous BYBIT theft incident also provided core data.
This new currency platform (Newpay) is an encryption platform that provides "Alipay style guaranteed transactions" for black ash products through query, and its size is very large, not to mention specifically
But the flow of funds here proves one thing: the theft was the hacking behavior of a professional team, which basically eliminates the possibility of self theft by employees
This indicates that the funds were stolen by a professional team and took a mature money laundering path.
This is worth thinking about:
1. From a platform perspective, it seems that all necessary verifications have been completed, which may seem irresponsible. However, as the custodian of funds in the cryptocurrency industry, the platform where user funds are located has been stolen by hackers. If the money cannot be recovered and Gate does not compensate, it will be another "Exchange Rashomon" incident, and users will suffer losses, but the trust of the cryptocurrency and platform will deteriorate severely again.
2. How can our assets be secure? If this incident is treated as an isolated case and triggers the development of AI that can deeply forge, can KYC still be reliable? Facial recognition can be synthesized, video recording can be forged, and historical transaction records can be pieced together from leaked databases. The "live detection" of the exchange may be similar to paper paste when facing professional attackers.
This may raise awareness among all peer platforms and potentially optimize certification schemes
Because there are only a few options for storage in the crypto community, including hot and cold wallets and exchanges, the most common option for large deposits is still cold wallet security. Which is smarter, the platform or the hacker, will have the right to control the funds.
So, this matter is now generally clear. The user was replaced by hackers who took away $1.7 million in funds stored on the Gate platform. Both the user and the Gate platform are currently victims. What do you think the Gate platform should do now?
I think it's posture
The posture of the first step was wrong, it was like thinking from top to bottom that the user might be "watching over themselves and stealing".
If the funds are flowing into hacker platforms now, it is equivalent to giving Gate a second chance to make a statement.
In the current encryption environment, cherish and practice!
That's it! Thanks!
