In The Matrix (1999), Neo and Morpheus briefly form a yin-yang symbol during their sparring match. As they mirror each other’s movements with the same attack, their contrasting black-and-white clothing, along with the shapes of their heads and hairstyles, create the striking visual effect. The concept of yin and yang emerged in ancient China more than 2,000 years ago and became a central idea in Taoist philosophy. Rather than representing good and evil, it describes two complementary forces that exist together in everything, such as light and darkness, stillness and movement, or strength and softness. Each half contains a small circle of the other, symbolizing that nothing is ever completely pure or absolute. Opposing forces are interconnected and constantly changing into one another. The Matrix is built around these same dualities: reality and illusion, humans and machines, choice and destiny. During the dojo fight, Neo and Morpheus mirror each other’s movements instead of simply opposing one another, reflecting the yin-yang idea that seemingly opposite forces can complement, shape, and transform each other.(Historic Vids)
