Rumor has it, OpenAI plans to make GPT-5.6 the final version in its 5.x iteration series.
The highly anticipated next-gen model, GPT-6, is being fast-tracked for release, with its launch window significantly moved up. It’s now expected to debut as early as late July or early August 2026.
On the foundational engineering side, GPT-6 will completely abandon the continuity-focused technical path previously outlined by OpenAI.
This model will no longer be based on the pretraining foundation of GPT-5.5/5.6, codenamed 'Spud,' which had approximately 4T parameters. Instead, it will shift to a brand-new pretraining foundation with a significantly expanded parameter scale.
Internal testing feedback on this new foundation at OpenAI has shown extremely high expectations. The core reason for the urgent schedule adjustment is to aggressively counteract competitive pressure from rivals.
Anthropic’s advanced model, Fable 5.1, is currently in the final stages of pipeline development and is expected to hit the market in the coming weeks.
OpenAI is aiming to preemptively release GPT-6 with its new foundation to block Anthropic’s traffic and ecosystem distribution rights within the same launch window.
