According to a report by the French National Gendarmerie Gendinfo, cyber investigators from the Montpellier UNCyber branch have shut down the online download site YGGTORRENT as part of an investigation into organized group copyright infringement, aggravated money laundering, and managing an online platform facilitating illegal transactions. Founded in 2017, the site had over 10 million members and was considered one of the most active piracy platforms in Europe, generating revenue primarily through the sale of data packages, with payment methods including bank cards and cryptocurrencies. Investigators estimate that rights holders have suffered losses amounting to tens of millions of euros. Since the end of 2023, 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including administrators, moderators, quality control personnel, and analysts. During the raids, police seized crypto assets linked to the site's revenue, €45,000 worth of computer equipment, and discovered over 50,000 torrent files.
