[U.S. Officials Once Worried About Israel Assassinating Iranian Negotiators] According to a report by Jinse Finance on July 3, citing The New York Times, U.S. intelligence and diplomatic officials suspected during secret U.S.-Iran negotiations this spring that Israel might be planning to assassinate key Iranian negotiators, including Foreign Minister Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf. The U.S. was concerned that such actions would directly undermine the ongoing temporary peace and ceasefire talks, and therefore issued potential risk warnings to Iran through regional countries. The report stated that Israel had already targeted several senior Iranian officials during the early stages of the conflict, including moderate figures originally involved in the negotiations. However, as the U.S. pushed for a ceasefire and dialogue, Washington believed that actions against negotiators could lead to the resumption of war. After April, the U.S. and Iran engaged in intensive contacts, coordinated by U.S. Vice President Vance, U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Wittekofer, and Jared Kushner, among others. The report also mentioned that Iran had repeatedly strengthened security measures and, during certain trips, deployed fighter jets to escort delegations to prevent the risk of attacks on negotiators.
