[CNBC: Some Companies Regret AI-Driven Layoffs, Now Rehiring Employees]
BlockBeats News, July 1 — According to a CNBC report, some companies that previously laid off employees citing AI as the reason have started rehiring, as automated systems failed to fully handle the relevant tasks. Analysts believe that cutting staff while increasing AI usage is not necessarily the best path to drive business growth. Ford is one of the latest companies to adjust its direction. Ford is rehiring hundreds of experienced engineers to address quality issues that automated systems cannot resolve. Charles Poon, Ford's Vice President of Hardware Engineering, stated: 'AI is a very good tool, but its effectiveness depends on the quality of the information used to train it.'
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia and IBM have also reemphasized human capital after laying off staff and investing in AI technology. Last year, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia laid off more than 40 customer service employees and replaced them with AI voice bots. However, the system failed to meet demand, leading to an increase in call volume, and the bank subsequently reversed its layoff decision. IBM had previously replaced some human resources functions with AI, which could handle about 94% of routine requests but was unable to address the remaining 6%, including ethical dilemmas. IBM later announced plans to triple its hiring for entry-level positions in the U.S. by 2026.
A report by Orgvue shows that 39% of business leaders have laid off staff due to AI deployment, with 55% admitting that these layoff decisions were mistakes. Data from Robert Half indicates that 32% of U.S. hiring managers said they had eliminated a position primarily due to AI, only to later rehire for the same or a similar role. Capitol Technology University stated that while AI is transforming the workplace, companies are discovering that human-machine collaboration is more valuable than fully replacing human labor.
