Research shows that weak recruitment has a greater impact on young American workers than artificial intelligence
According to a new study by the St. Louis Fed on June 30th, the main reason for youth unemployment in the United States is a shortage of job vacancies, rather than a lack of artificial intelligence skills. Due to insufficient job vacancies, the unemployment rate among the 18 to 24 age group increased by 2.9 percentage points from April 2023 to December last year. In contrast, the increase in unemployment rate due to employers increasing AI related positions and requiring professional skills is only 1.1 percentage points. Although the impact of AI is still significant, its degree of influence is more than twice that of the latter. The research author wrote, "Since April 2023, recruitment activities have slowed down, and young workers (especially newcomers who have just entered the workforce) have been the first to feel this weakness. For those who have just entered the labor market (especially recent college graduates), AI poses additional resistance, but its impact is still smaller than the overall reduction in job vacancies
