[South Korea Accelerates Nuclear Power Construction to Meet Surging Electricity Demand]
Reported by Jinse Finance, on June 30, the South Korean government plans to take measures to shorten the construction cycle of nuclear power plants to meet the rapidly growing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence. 'Building a nuclear power plant typically takes 9 to 10 years. We will explore ways to shorten this cycle,' said Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik. He stated that relevant details will be included in the upcoming long-term basic plan for electricity supply and demand.
To promote the booming development of artificial intelligence, companies and governments worldwide are seeking round-the-clock, low-carbon energy sources, which is leading to increasing support for nuclear power. Currently, about one-third of South Korea's electricity comes from nuclear energy, but due to plans for large-scale investments in data centers and semiconductor chip clusters, more electricity will be required.
However, compared to other energy sources, building nuclear reactors still takes longer, primarily due to regulatory hurdles and complex construction requirements. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are designed to accelerate construction speed, but this technology remains in its early stages and has yet to achieve widespread commercial deployment.
