Absolutely mind-blowing—RKLB is entering the satellite communications business! Just now, Rocket Lab officially announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to fully acquire Iridium Communications (IRDM) for $54 per share in cash and stock, valuing the deal at $8 billion. Iridium Communications is a commercial communications service provider that offers mobile voice and data services via its low Earth orbit satellite constellation, achieving true global coverage. After the merger, the two companies will create a vertically integrated aerospace giant with a full industry chain covering launches, satellite manufacturing, and satellite services. We’ve talked about this before—RKLB has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, having carried out multiple integrations over the past few years to form a highly vertically integrated industrial system. They produce almost all critical components in-house (similar to SpaceX’s closed-loop model but more focused on small-to-medium constellations and the defense market). This enables end-to-end delivery: customers can purchase “launch + complete satellite + payload + communications + operations” all in one go, significantly reducing integration risks and timelines. Plus, Iridium Communications has a business scale with revenue close to $1 billion and net profits exceeding $100 million. Post-merger, RKLB’s revenue will instantly double. RKLB is evolving from its previous dual-engine model of launches and full-system satellite components to a triple-engine model: launches, full-system satellite components, and satellite communications/data services. New strategic positioning: RKLB is now not only a launch provider but also a “satellite factory + key component supplier + defense prime contractor,” and now a satellite communications and data services provider.
