The Russian Ministry of Energy plans to ban cryptocurrency mining in the Moscow region from July 1st
Foresight News reported that according to TASS, the Russian Ministry of Energy has drafted a government resolution to ban digital currency mining in parts of Moscow, Moscow Oblast, and Kursk Oblast from July 1, 2026, and the ban will continue until December 31, 2032. The Kursk Oblast specifically involves multiple municipal administrative districts such as Belovsky, Borisholodatsky, Grushkovsky, Kolenevsky, Ligovsky, Rylsky, Sujayansky, and Khomutovski, as well as the city of Ligov. \In May of this year, Evgeny Grabchak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Russia, revealed to TASS that the government committee responsible for the development of the power industry had recommended implementing a mining ban in parts of Moscow City, Moscow Oblast, and Kursk Oblast until 2032. Sergey Voronanov, the Energy Minister of Moscow Oblast, previously stated that it is necessary to ban cryptocurrency mining in the region; According to authorities' assessment, Moscow City and Moscow Oblast have currently connected 65 data centers with a total power of 734 megawatts, including 19 data centers within Moscow Oblast with a total power of 233 megawatts. \Previously, the Russian government announced on March 20th that mining would be banned throughout the year in the Republic of Buryatia and the Outer Baikal Territory, and the restrictions would continue from April 1, 2026 to March 15, 2031; In addition, mining in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino Balkar, Karachay Cherkess, North Ossetia, Chechnya, as well as Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and other regions has been banned from January 1, 2025, and the restrictions will continue until March 15, 2031; The southern part of Irkutsk Oblast has also been completely banned from mining activities since April 2025.
