1,500 years ago, a Viking from Sweden was discovered wearing a bronze Buddha amulet—an unexpected artifact linking Norse life with distant Buddhist traditions.
The figurine was uncovered in 1954 at an ancient trading site near modern-day Stockholm. The amulet likely originated in what is now northern India or Pakistan, dating back to the 5th or 6th century.
Its presence in Scandinavia points to extensive long-distance trade networks that linked Europe and Asia well before the height of the Viking Age. Archaeologists are still unsure how it reached Sweden, though it may have traveled through a chain of merchants connecting South Asia, Central Asia, the Byzantine Empire, and Northern Europe.
Excavations at the same site also revealed Irish religious objects, Byzantine artifacts, and other imports from faraway regions. Together, these finds highlight just how interconnected the ancient world truly was.(Historic Vids)
