The largest gold theft case in China has been solved: all 27 kilograms of gold have been recovered, and the main perpetrator was intercepted 100 meters away
BlockBeats reported that on June 22, the police in Nanjing, China, recently announced that a gold theft case with the largest value in China so far had been fully solved. None of the 11 suspect involved in the case had escaped the net, and all 27 kilograms of gold stolen had been recovered. On the early morning of May 16, 2026, a luxury goods store in Jiangning District, Nanjing, was subjected to a carefully planned theft. The main culprit, Tong, climbed through the window from the second floor and entered the room, packing 37 pieces of gold products totaling 27 kilograms with a market value of over 27 million yuan, without touching luxury watches nearby throughout the entire process. Colleague Wang infiltrated the surveillance room in advance, closed nearly 80 surveillance cameras and formatted all data before flying to Bangkok to act as a 'remote director'. The door lock at the crime scene was intact and the surveillance data was cleared, which once plunged the police into a fog of investigation. The Nanjing task force recovered surveillance data and tracked public videos to reconstruct the whereabouts of Tong, who fled south from Nanjing by ride hailing. According to the driver's description afterwards, Tong looked flustered on the way and changed his destination multiple times. After arriving in Nanning, he couldn't pay the more than 7000 yuan fare and even broke off half a 50 gram gold piece from his bag to offset the payment. On the early morning of May 18th, the Aidian Border Police Station in Chongzuo, Guangxi received an emergency investigation report from the Nanjing police, and the civilian auxiliary police completed the assembly and precise control within 3 minutes. At 5:40 am, a white Jetta sedan was intercepted just a hundred meters away from the China Vietnam border, and Tong was caught on the spot with 8.75 kilograms of gold in his possession. From receiving the report to interception, it took less than half an hour. On May 23rd, the main culprit Wang was arrested in Bangkok and extradited back to China. The police recovered 13.2 kilograms of gold from his residence. Two highly educated gamblers, a hospital employee named Tong and a software company development manager named Wang, who were completely strangers, fell into the criminal path due to their deep involvement in online gambling debts (ranging from millions to seven million yuan) and ultimately fell into the legal system.
