U.S. import price index rose 1.9% MoM in May, matching April, and climbed 6.7% YoY — the fastest pace in nearly four years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday. Import plastics, made from fossil-fuel byproducts and used as key inputs for many consumer goods, jumped 6.5% in May, one of the largest monthly increases on record. Imported computer equipment, peripherals and semiconductors rose 3.6%, the second-largest monthly gain since 1994. The imported air passenger-fares category, which feeds directly into the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, also increased sharply. The report and recent data show the Iran war is weighing on the U.S. economy as inflationary pressure spreads beyond an initial oil shock; CPI and PPI have risen noticeably in recent months.(金十数据)
