[National Bureau of Statistics: National CPI fell by 0.1% month-on-month, compared to a 0.3% increase last month, mainly influenced by changes in energy and service prices] Jin10 News, June 10 – Dong Lijuan, Chief Statistician of the Urban Department at the National Bureau of Statistics, interpreted the CPI and PPI data for May 2026.
From a month-on-month perspective, the national CPI fell by 0.1%, compared to a 0.3% increase last month, mainly due to changes in energy and service prices. Affected by the transmission of international oil prices, domestic gasoline prices shifted from a 12.6% increase last month to a 0.3% decrease, driving energy prices from a 5.7% increase last month to a 0.1% decrease. This caused the month-on-month impact of energy prices on the CPI to shift from a 0.39 percentage point increase last month to a 0.01 percentage point decrease.
Due to the seasonal decline in travel following the May Day holiday, service prices shifted from a 0.5% increase last month to a 0.1% decrease, causing the month-on-month impact on the CPI to shift from a 0.22 percentage point increase last month to a 0.03 percentage point decrease. Among these, the prices of vehicle rentals and airline tickets shifted from increases of 8.6% and 29.2% last month to decreases of 6.8% and 6.3%, respectively, collectively contributing to a 0.04 percentage point decrease in the month-on-month CPI.
The seasonal launch of summer clothing drove clothing prices up by 0.6%, while strong demand related to AI drove prices for mobile phones and tablets up by 1.6% and 1.1%, respectively. These three items collectively contributed to a 0.05 percentage point increase in the month-on-month CPI.
