The founder of Zcash has confirmed a critical vulnerability in the Orchard system, which allowed unlimited counterfeit ZEC minting starting in May 2022, until it was patched on June 1 through Claude Opus 4.8. This vulnerability means that for over a year, the Zcash network faced serious security risks, and token holders may have suffered losses.
First, the passive existence of this vulnerability could lead to a significant decline in market trust, impacting Zcash's stability. Second, attackers could exploit this flaw to easily mint and sell unlimited counterfeit tokens, disrupting normal market transactions. To ensure the safety of their assets, users should immediately check their wallets, follow official updates for further notifications, and consider transferring assets to more secure storage options.
This incident serves as yet another reminder that while blockchain technology offers decentralization and tamper-resistance, it still requires constant monitoring and security patching. Users participating in any crypto project must remain vigilant and stay updated on the project's security developments to protect their investments.
