[A New York Bar Uses Kalshi to Hedge Promotional Activities, Predictive Markets Show 'Insurance' Function for the First Time]
According to a press release from Kalshi, The Jeffrey, a bar in New York's Upper East Side, launched a promotional event during Game 1 of the NBA Finals: if the New York Knicks won, all drinks for the night would be free for customers. To avoid incurring significant costs, the bar simultaneously invested $5,000 in a hedging position on the predictive market platform Kalshi, purchasing 'Knicks Win' contracts. Specifically, if the Knicks won, the bar would cover customers' tabs, but the profits from the Kalshi contracts would offset the related losses. If the Knicks lost, the bar would not need to offer free drinks and could benefit from the increased foot traffic generated by the promotion, only losing the cost of the hedge. Bar owner Andy Freedman stated that this approach allowed them to launch bolder marketing campaigns while managing risk.
