[A White Hat Hacker Helps Recover $2 Million Worth of ETH Locked in a 2016 ICO Contract for Nine Years]
According to The Block, a developer using the pseudonym Florent utilized white hat hacking techniques to rescue approximately 1,003 ETH (valued at around $2 million) that had been locked in the 2016 HongCoin ICO contract for nine years. The ICO was supposed to automatically refund funds after failing to meet its fundraising target, but a coding error caused the funds to be locked. The contract was written in an older version of the Solidity language, which lacked overflow protection mechanisms. Florent discovered that by invoking the admin function of the team and inputting specific values, the holder's balance could be reset to 1, thereby passing the refund check and releasing the ETH. The admin function was restricted to HongCoin's multisig address. Florent contacted the team, and after verifying the process on a testnet, the team independently signed the transaction to unlock the funds.
