[U.S. and Iran Engage in Intense Weekend Negotiations to Amend a Draft Agreement for Extending Ceasefire, While Israel Strikes Lebanon]
According to Golden Finance, on June 1, the United States and Iran exchanged messages over the weekend, seeking to amend a draft agreement aimed at extending the ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, it remains unclear whether the two sides have made substantive progress on key issues. While diplomatic negotiations continue, Israel has further expanded its ground military operations in Lebanon, jeopardizing the already fragile ceasefire arrangement.
Since U.S. President Donald Trump stated during a White House Situation Room meeting last Friday that he expected to announce an agreement, he has not made any public remarks on the Iran issue. Earlier that day, he reiterated his demands on social media, including Iran halting its nuclear program and fully restoring the Strait of Hormuz to its previous status as a free international waterway.
The semi-official Tasnim News Agency, which is closely linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, reported on Sunday that both sides are continuously proposing amendments but noted that the U.S. and Iran may ultimately reject these proposed changes, potentially leading to the collapse of the overall agreement.
According to Tasnim News Agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that talks and exchanges of information are still ongoing, and no conclusions can be drawn before a final result is achieved. He emphasized that everything being said now is merely speculation and should not be overinterpreted.
Meanwhile, Israel has launched its most extensive attack on Lebanon in 25 years, while Hezbollah, Iran's most significant regional ally, has intensified its attacks on northern Israel. (Sina Finance)
