**[OpenZeppelin Co-Founder: "All DeFi is Unsafe," Advises Friends and Family to Withdraw Investments]** BlockBeats News, May 27 — Manuel Aráoz, co-founder of the crypto security company OpenZeppelin, posted on social media on Tuesday stating that he now believes "all DeFi" is unsafe. He revealed that he has personally started advising friends and family to exit all DeFi positions, even low-risk positions in "blue-chip" protocols like Aave, MakerDAO, and Compound. Aráoz pointed out the asymmetry between attackers and defenders in security incidents. "Programmatic agents are exceptionally skilled at discovering vulnerabilities, and the security of smart contracts is highly asymmetric. Defenders need to fix every single vulnerability, while attackers only need to find one to steal funds." This comment reflects growing concerns about DeFi security following a series of major security incidents in recent months. Data shows that nearly $630 million was stolen from DeFi protocols in April, making it the worst month since February 2025, when Bybit suffered a $1.5 billion theft. Two major exploits in April — Drift ($285 million) and Kelp DAO ($293 million) — are widely believed to be linked to North Korea-backed hackers. Market confidence in DeFi has significantly declined, with the total value locked (TVL) in protocols dropping approximately 14% since mid-April, from around $172 billion to $148 billion. So far in May, 25 security incidents have already occurred, including the Verus Network cross-chain bridge exploit, which resulted in a $11.6 million loss, and the Polymarket prediction market platform admitting to a $570,000 security breach.
