[Latvian Police Dismantle SIM Card Fraud Operation, Seize $290,000 in Cryptocurrency]
Foresight News reports that Europol and Latvia's counter-terrorism unit recently raided an office in Latvia, dismantling a SIM card fraud operation. Police seized 1,200 SIM box devices and 40,000 active SIM cards capable of connecting to 80 countries simultaneously. The group operated two websites, Gogetsms and Apisim, providing on-demand rental of overseas phone numbers to criminals for activities such as phishing, bank fraud, investment scams, extortion, and human trafficking.
This network has caused at least 3,200 fraud cases in Austria and Latvia, with losses amounting to $5.8 million. Police also seized four luxury cars, froze $470,000 in bank account funds, and confiscated $290,000 in cryptocurrency. The operation was run by only seven individuals but facilitated the creation of 49 million fake accounts through their services.
