[A Lawsuit in New York Seeks Ownership of 39,000 Dormant Bitcoin Addresses, Involving Satoshi Nakamoto's Holdings] Foresight News reports, according to Cointelegraph, that on May 1, plaintiffs Noah Doe and two Wyoming-based limited liability companies filed a lawsuit in New York, USA, requesting the court to rule on their ownership of 39,069 dormant Bitcoin addresses. Citing New York State's abandoned property law, they claim that the Bitcoin held in these addresses constitutes "abandoned property" in a legal sense. The addresses in question include the "12c6D" address associated with Satoshi Nakamoto and the "1Feex" address linked to the Mt. Gox hack. According to estimates by Timechain Index founder, an on-chain analysis platform, the listed addresses collectively hold approximately 3.7 million BTC, valued at around $285 billion. However, Noveleader, Chief Research Analyst at investment research firm Castle Labs, pointed out that even if the court rules in favor of the plaintiffs, it would only be symbolic, as the Bitcoin network itself lacks a mechanism to reallocate funds without private keys. Additionally, the plaintiffs sent legal notices to P2PKH format addresses, while the BTC in question is actually stored in P2PK scripts. The analyst believes this approach is "structurally flawed" and may render the notification process itself invalid.
