[Fuzhou Court: Stealing Bitcoin Constitutes Theft, Man Sentenced to Over 12 Years for Stealing 4 BTC]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, the Cangshan District People's Procuratorate in Fuzhou disclosed that a man, during his access to another person's Bitcoin wallet hard drive and computer, stole the wallet's 'private key' and related data, illegally obtaining 4 Bitcoins and profiting approximately 900,000 yuan. The court sentenced him to 12 years and 7 months in prison for theft and imposed a fine of 300,000 yuan. The second trial upheld the original verdict. The procuratorial authorities stated that although current regulations explicitly clarify that virtual currencies do not have the status of legal tender, Bitcoin possesses value, manageability, and transferability, meeting the general characteristics of 'property' under criminal law. Therefore, it is considered an object of property crime, and related infringements will also be subject to criminal liability.
