A 20th-century bridge constructed atop an 18th-century bridge, which had itself been built over the remains of a 12th-century bridge.
Devil’s Bridge is a striking crossing over the River Mynach gorge in Wales, renowned for both its dramatic scenery and unusual layered history.
The site is famous for its series of bridges constructed within the same narrow span across different eras. These include a medieval bridge dating back to the 12th century, an 18th-century replacement built directly above it, and a later 20th-century road bridge added higher up in the same location.
Far below, the River Mynach cuts through a steep, forested gorge filled with cascading waterfalls, making the crossing notoriously difficult and dangerous for travelers in earlier centuries.
Local legend claims the original bridge was built by the Devil, who demanded the soul of the first living creature to cross it as payment. According to the story, a clever woman outwitted him by sending her dog across first, leaving the Devil with only the animal’s soul.(Historic Vids)
