Samsung Electronics restarts labor negotiations, Minister of Labor intervenes to mediate
Golden Finance reported that on May 20, according to Yonhap News Agency, the labor and management parties of Samsung Electronics in South Korea, facing the general strike crisis due to the breakdown of mediation after the event, restarted wage negotiations on May 20, and employed the minister of labor, Jin Rongxun, to mediate in person.
Samsung Electronics' labor management restarted negotiations at 4:25 pm on the same day at the Gyeonggi Employment and Labor Department of the Ministry of Labor in Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province. This negotiation is different from the post mediation led by the Central Labor Committee under the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and it is not intended to propose a mediation scheme with force. The Ministry of Employment and Labor stated that the negotiations on that day were autonomous negotiations between labor and management, and Jin Rongxun will provide support for this. The Jin Rongxun Plan proposes multiple solutions to the main controversial issues, persuading both labor and management to make concessions and seek compromises.
Samsung Electronics conducted a second round of ex post mediation under the auspices of the Central Labor Committee from the 18th to the same day, but core disputes such as the distribution method of performance bonuses in various departments failed to narrow differences. After the Central Labour Commission put forward a compromise mediation plan, the trade union agreed, but the management held a reserved attitude, and the mediation finally failed.
After the second round of post mediation of Samsung Electronics failed, the labor union said that it would start the general strike according to the plan on the 21st. The government has hinted or exercised emergency mediation power over this incident to prevent a collective strike from severely damaging the national economy. Analysis suggests that in this context, Jin Rongxun's mediation aims to encourage both labor and management to maintain dialogue until the last moment and strive to reach an agreement.
