[Cryptocurrency Mining to Be Banned in Russia's Kursk Border Region]
According to Deep Tide TechFlow on May 19, citing a report from Bits.media, the Russian government’s legislative committee approved a proposal on May 18 to ban cryptocurrency mining in certain border areas of the Kursk region. Kursk Governor Alexander Khinshtein announced this decision during a regional government meeting.
The ban will cover eight districts and the city of Lgov, including Belovsky, Bolshesoldatsky, Glushkovsky, and others. The primary reason for the ban is that residents in these border areas currently enjoy exemptions from paying utility fees for water and electricity. If mining were allowed, the associated electricity costs would be borne by the federal budget, creating a financial burden. Additionally, ongoing attacks by Ukrainian armed forces and difficulties in repairing infrastructure have led to strained local energy supplies.
The governor stated that the ban could be lifted once the situation stabilizes, residents return, and utility payments resume, but no specific timeline was provided.
