[Vitalik Responds to Ethereum State Storage Controversy: Fundamental Challenges Persist with Off-Chain Storage Hash Solutions] Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on May 18, Vitalik Buterin posted on the X platform addressing the community's proposed Ethereum state storage optimization plan of 'user self-storing data, with only hashes and proofs stored on-chain.' Vitalik pointed out its fundamental limitation: the data required to verify proofs still needs to be stored and continuously updated, with its volume comparable to the current state data, meaning it does not truly reduce the burden. He stated that while feasible solutions exist, they all involve multiple complex steps and require varying degrees of trade-offs compared to Ethereum's current state. Previously, the community discussion was centered around the EIP-8037 proposal — a proposal aimed at curbing state growth by significantly increasing the initial gas costs for new contracts, accounts, and storage slots, but it was deemed a temporary fix rather than a fundamental solution. Currently, alternative solutions such as cryptographic sharding, off-chain stateless contracts, and periodic blockchain pruning are still being actively discussed within the community, with no consensus reached yet.
