This massive salt pile in Germany stands more than 820 feet tall and contains over 200 million tons of salt. At first glance, Monte Kali looks like a giant white mountain rising from the German countryside, but it is entirely man-made. The massive heap is made mostly of sodium chloride left over from potash mining near Heringen, where potash is heavily used in fertilizer production. Since the 1970s, millions of tons of excess salt have been piled into this artificial mountain, earning nicknames like “Monte Kali” and “Kalimanjaro.” Towering more than 250 meters above the surrounding land and containing roughly 200 million tonnes of salt, it has become one of Germany’s most striking industrial landmarks and a visible reminder of the environmental impact of mining and modern agriculture. Today, Monte Kali also draws tourists, with guided hikes leading visitors to the summit for sweeping views across the Werra Valley.(Historic Vids)
