[Samsung's Largest Union Claims Lack of Transparency in Compensation System, Hopes to Avoid Strike Through Negotiations]
Odaily Planet Daily News – According to Nikkei News, the head of Samsung Electronics' largest union stated that if the company can improve transparency in its compensation system, the union hopes to avoid the strike originally scheduled to begin on May 21. Choi Seung-ho, the head of the Samsung Electronics Union under the Samsung Group Union, said that management has the authority to independently decide bonus distributions, making the compensation system 'lacking in transparency.' This union is the largest within Samsung, with approximately 70,000 members, accounting for more than half of the company's total workforce. On Monday, the union resumed negotiations with management, which had been paused at the end of March and later resumed under the mediation of relevant South Korean government departments. The union warned that if negotiations fail, members will strike for 18 days from May 21 to June 7, with an estimated daily loss of 1 trillion won (approximately $680 million), and additional costs will be incurred to restore semiconductor production lines to full capacity. The union hopes to allocate up to 15% of each business division's operating profit for bonus distribution and to remove the bonus cap. (Jin10)
