Microsoft CEO Testifies in OpenAI Lawsuit, Altman and Musk Controversy Spreads to AI Giant Core Partnership
Odaily Planet Daily News: In the OpenAI lawsuit, Satya Nadella testified in the Oakland Federal Court in California as the CEO of Microsoft. The legal dispute surrounding OpenAI's non-profit structure and commercialization path continues to escalate. The lawsuit was filed by Musk in 2024, accusing Microsoft of "assisting and promoting the violation of charitable trust obligations" during OpenAI's transition from a non-profit organization to commercialization. Microsoft has been making strategic investments in OpenAI since 2019, with a cumulative investment of approximately $13 billion by 2023, making it one of OpenAI's most important external supporters. During the trial, Satya Nadella reviewed the early partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI, and mentioned that both parties had established deep technical and computing cooperation before the release of ChatGPT. Musk stated in his previous testimony that Microsoft's additional $10 billion investment in OpenAI in 2023 was a key milestone in its decision to file a lawsuit, and that the scale of the investment changed OpenAI's original non-profit oriented structure. Musk stated in the trial, "We are concerned that they are turning charitable organizations into commercial tools." He also questioned Microsoft's potential dominant position in the development of General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) and pointed out that its deep binding with OpenAI may affect the industry's competitive landscape. At present, the case is still under trial, and disputes surrounding OpenAI's governance structure, non-profit nature, and control of the AI industry are expected to continue to ferment. (CNBC)
