Due to soaring gas prices, the U.S. is considering suspending the federal gas tax. America's top energy official stated that the Trump administration is open to suspending the federal gas tax to lower retail gas prices. “This administration supports all measures that can reduce gas prices and lower the cost of living for Americans,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Wright repeatedly emphasized that he couldn’t guarantee whether gas prices would drop below $3 per gallon (3.8 liters) later this year or rise above $5 per gallon. Despite the ongoing war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, he claimed that the energy production outlook in countries like Venezuela is “very promising.” According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the current average gas price in the U.S. is $4.52 per gallon, with the federal tax accounting for about 18 cents per gallon.
