According to a report by Jinse Finance on May 6, Goldman Sachs stated in a report on Tuesday that as capacity growth accelerates, the power demand of data centers will rise sharply. It is expected that by 2027, their electricity consumption will more than double compared to the end of 2025, which will put pressure on the U.S. electricity market. Goldman Sachs estimates that the power demand of U.S. data centers will increase from approximately 31 GW in 2025 to 41 GW in 2026 and reach 66 GW in 2027. By then, data centers will account for about 8.5% of total U.S. electricity demand. This surge in power consumption reflects the significantly accelerated pace of data center capacity expansion. Goldman Sachs predicts that even considering project delays and cancellations, the total capacity of U.S. data centers will still more than double from the end of 2025 levels, reaching approximately 95 GW by the end of 2027. Goldman Sachs noted that the surge in data center power demand will further exacerbate the strain on the U.S. electricity market—many of which are already under pressure—thereby increasing the risks of rising electricity prices and challenges to power supply reliability.
