[Colombian President: Bitcoin Mining Could Transform the Economic Landscape of the Country's Caribbean Coast]
According to Cointelegraph, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that the country's Caribbean coastal region has the potential to become a hub for Bitcoin mining, leveraging surplus renewable energy to attract foreign investment and drive economic development. Petro proposed that cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could establish mining facilities and suggested that Colombia's largest indigenous community, the Wayúu, become co-owners of the project. Petro's presidential term will end in August, and he will not participate in the presidential election on May 31. Paraguay, utilizing hydroelectric power from the Itaipu Dam, has become the fourth-largest Bitcoin mining country, accounting for 4.3% of the global hash rate. A World Bank report shows that 75% of Colombia's electricity comes from renewable energy, more than double the global average.
