[Research: Generative AI Has Not Significantly Enhanced Hacker Capabilities, More Often Used for Spam and Fraud] DeepTech TechFlow reports, on May 6, researchers from the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Strathclyde published a paper indicating that generative AI has not noticeably transformed hackers into 'super hackers.' The research team analyzed 97,895 posts on cybercrime forums following the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 and manually reviewed over 3,200 posts. They found that 97.3% of the sample was categorized as 'other,' not actual discussions about using AI for criminal activities; only 1.9% involved tools like 'vibe coding.' The study pointed out that so-called 'Dark AI' tools like WormGPT and FraudGPT are more about market hype, with limited actual malicious software output. Many posts primarily involved seeking free access, speculation, or complaints about the tools being ineffective. The research concluded that AI's observable applications in crime are currently concentrated on low-barrier, high-frequency activities such as bulk SEO spam, romance scams, voice cloning, image generation, and low-cost AI-generated nude services.
