Early this morning, the Federal Reserve press conference might very well be Powell's last appearance as Fed Chair. Powell's term as Chair ends on May 15, and the next FOMC meeting is scheduled for June 16-17. This means that if Kevin Warsh completes Senate confirmation and is officially sworn in before the June meeting, the April press conference is likely to be the final one of the Powell era. As of now, the chances of Warsh taking over are not low. The Senate Banking Committee has already approved Warsh's nomination with a 13-11 vote, sending it to the full Senate for a vote, which is expected to take place during the week of May 11. If this timeline proceeds smoothly, Warsh could take over before Powell's term ends on May 15. Of course, if Warsh's confirmation process is delayed or he hasn’t officially taken office by the June meeting, Powell might continue to chair the next meeting as Acting Chair. Although Powell may no longer be Chair, he doesn’t plan to leave the Federal Reserve immediately. He has stated that he will remain on the Fed's Board of Governors for a while after his term ends but won’t act as a shadow chair. Trump commented on this: 'Powell wants to stay at the Fed because he can’t find a job anywhere else.'
