Jesse Pollak: AI agent requires native payment system, x402 protocol to process $48 million transaction

Jesse Pollak, the head of the Base Chain, stated that AI agents require native and programmable payment systems. The x402 protocol has processed approximately $480 million in payments, of which 95% occurred on the Base network. This protocol was developed by Coinbase in collaboration with Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, and supports on-demand API payments without the need for traditional subscription systems. The encryption infrastructure can enable AI agents to access real-time and low-cost payment data, calculate or book travel services, with the goal of creating an open service market and enabling software to purchase digital services in real-time.
