A man in the United States has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for planning a $20 million cryptocurrency fraud case
BlockBeats News: On April 17th, according to the US Department of Justice, Robert Dunlap, a man from Texas, was sentenced to 23 years in prison by federal judge LaShonda A. Hunt for plotting cryptocurrency fraud and defrauding nearly 1000 investors of over $20 million, and must pay compensation to the victims.
Between 2018 and 2023, Dunlap claimed to operate a cryptocurrency enterprise that sold fake digital assets called "Meta-1 Coin" through the "Meta-1 Coin Trust". He spread multiple false statements to potential and actual investors, claiming that the token was backed by art worth up to $1 billion and $44 billion in gold, and falsely claiming that an accounting firm had audited and certified the value of the gold. The so-called art collection is said to cover works by well-known artists such as Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh, etc. To cover up the fact that Dunlap does not actually hold the aforementioned gold or artwork, he forged a batch of legal documents.
