It seems that the Bitcoin community is taking a much more aggressive step towards quantum resistance than imagined! The previously submitted BIP360 can only solve the quantum resistance of new wallets, but a large number of old wallets, including Satoshi Nakamoto, cannot. Six people, including @ lopp, who focus on Bitcoin security, have officially submitted a draft of the BIP361 code repository to solve this problem. The proposal is divided into three stages.
Firstly, in the first three years, it is not allowed to send funds to any wallet address with quantum security risks, which accelerates the adoption of anti quantum wallets such as BIP360, provides sufficient migration time, and happens to be before Google calculates the quantum computing to crack Bitcoin by 2030.
Secondly, two years later, we will directly refuse to execute signature transactions of ECDSA and Schnorr, two old wallet types, which means completely locking these funds exposed to quantum computing risks.
Finally, the addresses of these old wallets will be claimed and migrated to the new wallet through zero knowledge proof.
This proposal is technically feasible, but the most difficult part is how to obtain consensus from the entire Bitcoin community, so that nodes, miners, exchanges, wallets, and Bitcoin holders can all recognize this solution, as it directly violates the initial ethical principle of "your funds are under your control" in Bitcoin.
